Beresford

The deal includes a spring training invitation. The 23-year-old has spent the majority of his minor league career in the Twins’ organization, posting an underwhelming .279/.339/.319 line with one home run in 585 games. He’ll compete for a utility infielder role with the Twins.

Beresford managed one hit in seven Grapefruit League at-bats. He could be given a shot at some point in 2013.

The 27-year-old Australia native earned his first call-up after batting .269/.330/.312 over 122 games in Triple-A this season. He has experience at all four infield positions and will serve as a utility infielder down the stretch. The Twins have yet to announce the corresponding roster move.

It looks to be a routine day off. Joe Mauer and Eduardo Escobar are also sitting out, as the Twins have Logan Schafer in right field, Kennys Vargas at first base and James Beresford at third base.

He’s been battling a quad injury for the past few weeks and may not see any more action this year. September call-up James Beresford will fill in at first base and bat ninth against White Sox right-hander James Shields.

Beresford made his major league debut in September with the Twins but was taken off the 40-man roster the next month. The 27-year-old will look to catch on in another organization.

He’s dealt with quad issues for a couple weeks now. With the Twins facing lefties Monday and Tuesday, manager Paul Molitor thinks it might be a good time to get Mauer an extended break. James Beresford is filling in at first base Sunday. The Twins also have Miguel Sano and Kurt Suzuki on the bench, as Kennys Vargas is the designated hitter an Juan Centeno is catching.

The club now has an extra 40-man roster spot to play with. Beresford made his major league debut late this season with the Twins, picking up five hits in 22 at-bats.

Beresford, who turns 27 in January, batted .307/.341/.359 with one home run and 50 RBI over 129 games this past season with Triple-A Rochester. He’ll continue to serve as minor league depth in 2016.
