Wright also wants to return, knowing this may be his best shot at a major league job. He should head into spring training leading the competition for the fifth starter role.

Wright allowed four hits and one run. Looks like the 0-4 Brewers could already use him.

In his first relief appearance, he surrendered a 3-run homer. Wright has an 8.05 ERA for Indianapolis. His contract allows him to become a free agent if he’s not with the Brewers on May 1. He won’t be. But it’s probably not best for his chances to catch on elsewhere if he leaves with those kind of numbers. He should stay at Indy and see if he can get it going.

Wright says he’s in the best shape of his life after working out with trainer Brett Fischer, who was recommended by Shawn Estes. Estes credits Fischer with turning his career around last season.

Wright is expected to open the season in the minors. He has an out clause in the contract that will enable him to become a free agent if he is not in the big leagues by the end of April.

The Brewers have an opening in their rotation, but accoring to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wright would likely begin the year in Triple-A.

Wright is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA in six starts at Triple-A Oklahoma. Ryan Drese and Tony Mounce are other possibilities.

Wright requested his release from the Rangers a week ago.

''I’ve always wanted to see what would happen if (pitching coach Don Gullett) got a hold of him and straightened him out,’' Reds manager Bob Boone said.

Wright has already caught up with the team and his signing should become official today.
