Phillies sent RHP Jean Cabrera outright to Double-A Reading.

Cabrera went unclaimed on waivers after being removed from Philadelphia’s 40-man roster last weekend. The 24-year-old starter has yet to reach the big leagues and has been hit hard in the upper minors this season. This is merely a procedural move.

Phillies designated RHP Jean Cabrera for assignment.

The Phillies needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster to bring back Bryan De La Cruz on Sunday and unfortunately for Cabrera he drew the short straw this time. The 24-year-old right-hander has been abysmal in the minor leagues this season, posting a 9.10 ERA, 1.94 WHIP and a 46/32 K/BB ratio over 62 1/3 innings in 15 starts between Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. It seems likely he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and remain with the Phillies.

Phillies optioned RHPs Yoniel Curet and Moisés Chace to Double-A Reading; optioned RHP Jean Cabrera and OF Gabriel Rincones Jr. to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Curet came over in an offseason trade with the Rays and offers enough strikeout upside to envision a back-end rotation or multi-inning relief role down the road. He’ll need to iron out some control issues to reach that potential. Chace and Cabrera are among the better pitching prospects in Philadelphia’s system and should ascend to the majors later this year.

Phillies optioned RHP Max Lazar, Phillies, RHP Moisés Chace and RHP Jean Cabrera to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Lazar was hit hard in a handful of spring outings after making 11 relief appearances last year for the Phillies. The 25-year-old will open the year back at the Triple-A level as extra depth.
