Blue Jays signed manager John Schneider to a two-year contract extension.
The financial details are not public at the moment, but Schneider was heading into the final year of his contract, so he will now be under contract with the Blue Jays through the 2028 season. After taking the Blue Jays to the World Series last season and finishing second in the AL Manager of the Year race, it’s certainly a deserved deal for Schneider.
  • CLE Manager #21
Stephen Vogt won the American League Manager of the Year Award.
Vogt received 17 first-place votes to edge John Schneider, who got 10 first-place votes to finish second. Dan Wilson came away with a pair of first-place votes and Alex Cora also received one to finish third and fourth, respectively. The 41-year-old skipper, who helped guide the Guardians to an improbable late-season comeback to wrestle the AL Central division crown from Detroit this past season, earns the honor for the second straight season, joining Bobby Cox, Kevin Cash and Pat Murphy as the only repeat winners since 1983. He’s gone 180-143 (.557) in two seasons at the helm in Cleveland.
  • Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins said the team has exercised manager John Schneider’s option for 2026.
Atkins added that they are involved in talks about an extension. A new deal is also expected for president and CEO Mark Shapiro, whose current contact only ran through this year.
  • CLE Manager #21
Stephen Vogt, John Schneider and Dan Wilson were named finalists for the American League Manager of the Year Award.
It’s notable that all three finalists are former catchers with Vogt checking in as one for the second consecutive campaign after guiding Cleveland to an improbable late-season comeback to wrestle the AL Central division crown from Detroit. Schneider finds himself among the finalists for the first time in his six seasons at the helm while Dan Wilson is one in just his second year as Seattle’s skipper. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, November 11.
  • The Blue Jays are moving on from hitting coach Guillermo Martinez, reports TSB’s Scott Mitchell.
Martinez has spent 12 years with the Blue Jays organization, the last six as the team’s hitting coach under Charlie Montoyo and John Schneider. The team hit just .241/.313/.389 this year and scored 671 runs, its lowest total since 1997 (2020 excepted).
  • The Blue Jays hired DeMarlo Hale to be their associate manager.
The 62-year-old coach returns to the Blue Jays, where he previously served as the bench coach from 2013 - 2018. Hale has spent the last three years working as the Guardians’ bench coach under Terry Francona, where he occasionally filled in as the interim manager when Francona needed to step away from the team due to health issues. Don Mattingly will remain as the Jays’ bench coach and will also serve as their offensive coordinator for the 2024 season.
  • Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins told reporters on Tuesday that Carlos Febles will be the team’s third base coach for the 2024 season.
Febles served in the same role with the Red Sox from 2018-2023 — winning a World Series with the club in 2018. He’ll replace Luis Rivera in the Jays’ third base coach box.
  • Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Saturday that John Schneider will return for the 2024 season.
Schneider understandably came under fire for his controversial decision last week to lift José Berríos after just 47 pitches from his AL Wild Card Series start against the Twins, but the Blue Jays aren’t going to make a managerial change this offseason. Atkins, who also noted that the Berríos decision came from Schneider, not the front office, added that there will be discussions this offseason regarding the rest of the coaching staff.
  • Blue Jays hired Don Mattingly as bench coach.
A new kind of gig for Mattingly, who has spent the last 12 years in a managerial role. He skippered the Dodgers from 2011-2015 and then stepped away from a seven-year run (2016-2022) with the Marlins last month. The 61-year-old will work alongside manager John Schneider in Toronto.

  • Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post report that Don Mattingly is deep in talks with the Blue Jays to become their next bench coach.
It’s anticipated that the deal will get wrapped up quickly and an official announcement should be made before the week is through. Mattingly, 61, spent the past seven seasons managing the Miami Marlins to a 443-587 (.430) record. He makes sense for the Jays to hire an experienced bench coach as manager John Schneider -- who just sided a three-year contract in October -- has only managed 74 games in his career.
