Jonathan Herrera went 5-for-6 with a homer and a double Thursday for Single-A Modesto.
Herrera, 21, is batting .312/.386/.427 with 32 steals in the California League. He probably doesn’t have a future at shortstop with Troy Tulowitzki ahead of him, but he’s another potential option at second base for the Rockies. He’ll probably continue to form a double-play combination with Corey Wimberly at Double-A next year.

Jonathan Herrera doubled, homered and drove in two runs in Wednesday’s win over the Padres.
He took Clayton Richard deep for a two-run bomb in the second inning. The extra-base hits were Herrera’s first of the season. Purely a reserve, Herrera is off the radar in deeper NL-only leagues.
  • KC Third Base Coach
Chris Nelson (wrist) is not in the Rockies’ starting lineup Monday against the Dodgers.
Nelson is still dealing with some soreness in his wrist after tweaking it on a play in Pittsburgh last week. Jonathan Herrera will make the start at the hot corner Monday and bat second.
  • NYY Shortstop #12
Troy Tulowitzki is not in Wednesday’s lineup against the Padres.
Tulo tweaked his groin while running to first base on Tuesday, so he’s getting the day off as a precaution. Marco Scutaro will make the start at shortstop Wednesday while Jonathan Herrera plays second base.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman
Jonathan Herrera homered, doubled, walked twice and scored three runs Friday against the Braves.
A rare power outburst from Herrera, who entered with all of five homers and 13 doubles in 598 career at-bats. With Chris Nelson struggling, Herrera may have just earned himself a look as the Rockies’ primary third baseman. He’s worth picking up in NL-only leagues.
  • NYY Shortstop #12
Troy Tulowitzki is not in Wednesday’s lineup.
It’s a routine physical and mental day off for Tulo, who has already committed a whopping six errors this season. Marco Scutaro is starting at shortstop against the Padres with Jonathan Herrera covering second.
  • SF 2nd Baseman
Marco Scutaro is not in the Rockies’ lineup Wednesday afternoon against the Dodgers.
We haven’t heard anything about an injury, so he’s likely just getting the day off. Jonathan Herrera will start in his place at second base and bat leadoff against left-hander Clayton Kershaw.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman
Rockies activated INF Jonathan Herrera from the 60-day disabled list.
Herrera’s 2012 season came to a premature close after the infielder fractured his index finger in early September. He batted .242/.313/.299 in 320 plate appearances.

Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports that the Rockies have some interest in free agent Ryan Theriot.
The Rockies are currently projected to have some combination of Jonathan Herrera, Chris Nelson and D.J. LeMahieu at second base next season, but they are also considering some more experienced alternatives. Theriot, 32, was non-tendered by the Cardinals earlier this month after batting just .271/.321/.342 with one home run, 47 RBI, four stolen bases and a .662 OPS over 483 plate appearances this past season. The level of their interest isn’t clear and it’s not known whether negotiations have actually taken place.
  • CHC 2nd Baseman
Jonathan Herrera left Tuesday’s game with right hamstring tightness.
It’s not clear at this point if it’s a day-to-day situation or perhaps something worse. Marco Scutaro replaced him at second base.
