Orioles signed catcher Jose Reyes to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Reyes, who was up with the Cubs in Sept. 2006, missed last season following surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow. He’ll likely be a backup catcher in Double- or Triple-A next year.

Jose Reyes is expected to be called up from Triple-A Iowa on Monday to serve as the Cubs’ third catcher.

With Michael Barrett likely out for the season the Cubs needed to add a third catcher. Reyes, who hit .250 for Tripel-A Iowa this season, will only play in emergency situations.

Cubs recalled catcher Jose Reyes from Triple-A Iowa.

Reyes, 23, hit .238/.307/.274 between Double- and Triple-A this year. The Cubs have at least two and probably three superior catching prospects, including Geovany Soto, who was already called up. It’s unlikely that Reyes will see much action at all.

    Cubs non-tendered catcher Jose Reyes.

Someone’s going to run with the “Jose Reyes non-tendered” headline. This Reyes was only brought up in September because the Cubs had lost Michael Barrett. He’s not in the team’s plans, though he could be re-signed.
