Diamondbacks optioned INF Jose Fernandez to Triple-A Reno.
With the Diamondbacks’ infield getting healthy, Fernandez had been relegated to a bench role in recent weeks and it sounds like they want him to continue to get everyday at-bats at the Triple-A level to stay ready if another injury strikes. The 22-year-old held his own with the D’Backs, hitting .255/.289/.352 with three homers, 15 RBI and seven stolen bases in his first 177 plate appearances.

Ketel Marte is out of the lineup for Wednesday’s showdown against the Dodgers.
Marte receives his first day off since May 17. He’s been one of the hottest hitters in baseball since that point, batting .377 (23-for-61) with five homers and 21 RBI during that 15-game stretch. It’ll be Ildemaro Vargas taking over at the keystone with Jose Fernandez covering first base in this one.
  • AZ Shortstop #2
Geraldo Perdomo is out of the lineup for Tuesday’s showdown against the Dodgers.
Perdomo went 0-for-3 during Monday’s series opener at Chase Field, leaving him with a .221 batting average with three homers, 21 RBI and eight steals through 56 games. It’s a noticeable difference from last year’s 20-homer, 100-RBI, 27-steal breakthrough campaign where he also hit .290 across 161 games and delivered first-round fantasy value. The hope for Arizona and fantasy managers is that a mental reset enables Perdomo to get back on track. It’ll be rookie Jose Fernandez at shortstop on Tuesday night against Los Angeles.
  • AZ Shortstop #2
Geraldo Perdomo (ankle) remains out of the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Brewers.
Hard-hitting rookie Jose Fernandez takes over at shortstop again with Perdomo missing his second consecutive contest after suffering a left ankle sprain during Saturday’s showdown against the Padres in Mexico City. The 26-year-old franchise cornerstone doesn’t appear ticketed for the injured list, but that could always change. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day.
  • AZ Shortstop #2
Geraldo Perdomo (ankle) is not in the Diamondbacks’ lineup for Sunday’s matchup against the Padres in Mexico City.
The Diamondbacks still believe that Perdomo won’t require an extended absence from the left ankle sprain that he sustained during Saturday’s game, but they’ll hold him out on Sunday as a precautionary measure. Jose Fernandez will make his first career start at shortstop in his place and will bat sixth against Padres’ right-hander Michael King.
  • AZ Shortstop #2
Geraldo Perdomo is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Sunday afternoon’s showdown against the Blue Jays.
Perhaps this was already a planned day off for Perdomo, but it’s odd to give the slumping infielder a breather after he went 3-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday night against the Jays. Jose Fernandez will start in his place at shortstop and bat third for the Diamondbacks on Sunday.
  • AZ Catcher #14
Gabriel Moreno (back) remains out of the lineup on Monday against the Orioles.
This is now the third straight game Moreno has missed. It had previously been reported that he would wind up on the injured list, but, so far, the Diamondbacks have not decided to make that move. Instead, Adrian Del Castillo will start behind the dish and bat fourth, which will allow Jose Fernandez to bat fifth and be the designated hitter.
  • AZ Shortstop #11
Jose Fernandez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Phillies 4-3 on Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.
Fernandez plated Geraldo Perdomo with a game-tying RBI single off of Jose Alvarado in the eighth inning, then raced around to score the go-ahead run on an RBI knock off the bat of Adrian Del Castillo. The 22-year-old continues to impress with the Diamondbacks, slashing .333/.333/.528 with two homers, seven RBI and a stolen base through his first 36 big league plate appearances.
  • AZ Shortstop #11
Jose Fernandez went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored as the Diamondbacks triumphed over the Mets 7-1 on Thursday night.
Fernandez smacked a one-out double off of Nolan McLean in the second inning, but never advanced past second base. He then helped to spur a four-run rally in the seventh with a one-out single that chased McLean before scoring on an RBI ground out off the bat of Alek Thomas. He also drove in a run with a ground ball in the eighth inning. The 22-year-old infielder has impressed in his brief stay with the Diamondbacks, hitting .333 (8-for-24) with a pair of home runs, five RBI and a stolen base.

Jose Fernandez is at first base and batting seventh on Saturday against the Braves.
It’s notable that Fernandez is getting an opportunity at the cold corner with veteran Carlos Santana off to a frigid .043 (1-for-23) start through seven games. The 22-year-old rookie has gone 3-for-9 with two homers and four RBI through three games since being called up earlier this week.
