Zeid has begun using a sidearm delivery on a few of his pitches -- he’s capable of doing so with his four-seamer, two-seamer and slider -- a change first seen in Tuesday’s loss against the Twins. “It’s in its infancy,” Zeid, who was acquired in the Hunter Pence deal, said. “It’s not a finished product, but it’s something that can help myself and my ballclub down the road.”

Zeid had trouble attracting interest after putting up middling numbers in the minors the last two seasons, but an impressive showing for Israel in the World Baseball Classic might have piqued the Cardinals’ interest. Slated to turn 30 on Friday, Zeid hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2014 and will surely begin 2017 at Triple-A Memphis.

Zeid, 27, put up a 6.97 ERA over 23 relief appearances with the big club this season. He should be fine by the time spring training rolls around.

Zeid has allowed three runs over seven relief innings across a couple stints with the big club this season. He’ll work in middle relief.

The official diagnosis is bilateral sesamoiditis, a painful inflammation of the sesamoid bones. Zeid owns an ugly 6.97 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP in 20 2/3 innings of relief this season for the Astros. It’s not clear how long he will be sidelined.

Zeid was placed on the disabled list Saturday with what’s being called bilateral sesamoiditis in his left foot, but the Astros want to get a better look at the injury. Consider him out indefinitely for now.

Zeid gave up 12 hits and four earned runs in 8 2/3 innings this spring in the Grapefruit League, failing to claim a spot in the Astros’ Opening Day bullpen.
