Thomas had a 6.75 ERA and 9/4 K/BB ratio over 10 2/3 innings this spring, so it’s not like he’s been lights-out, but Andrew Bailey’s thumb injury has opened up a spot for a second left-hander. He’ll likely be used in the middle innings and lower-leverage situations while Franklin Morales figures to be more of a late-game option.

Thomas was designated for assignment by Boston on Thursday to make room for Daniel Nava. He had a 7.71 ERA and 2.57 WHIP in seven games with the Red Sox.

Thomas made Boston’s Opening Day roster, but got the boot to Pawtucket in late-April after he posted a 7.71 ERA and 2.57 WHIP while allowing 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings. Boston needed a spot on the 40-man roster, so Thomas is now available to every team in baseball.

Thomas cleared waivers after being designated for assignment last week. The 28-year-old southpaw posted a 9.00 ERA in four appearances with the Bombers this season.

Thomas pitched pretty well in the minors in 2012 but flopped in seven major league appearances. He’ll give the A’s a left-handed bullpen arm at Triple-A.
