Braves recalled RHP Kevin Barry from Triple-A Richmond.

Barry spent much of July with the Braves as a reliver, but he’s going to join the rotation this time and start Saturday against the Brewers. It’s unlikely that he’ll be worth using in NL-only leagues.

Kevin Barry is being mentioned as a possible replacement for John Thomson in the Braves’ rotation.

Thomson is out indefinitely due to a sore shoulder and the Braves will need a starter for Tuesday’s game. Barry is 4-5 with a 3.30 ERA in 18 starts for Triple-A Richmond. Anthony Lerew is also being mentioned as a possible starter for Tuesday.

Kevin Barry gave up five runs and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings against the Brewers to take a loss Saturday in his first major league start.

At best, Barry might have some sort of lasting career as a middle reliever. The Braves might have to give him another start or two, but he won’t last in that role.

Braves purchased the contract of RHP Kevin Barry from Triple-A Richmond.

Barry did some nice work as a reliever the past two years, but it never earned him a callup from the Braves. He was also bypassed twice in the Rule 5 draft. The 27-year-old resumed starting this year for the first time since college and had a 3.26 ERA and a 63/27 K/BB ratio in 77 1/3 innings for Richmond. If his command holds up, he could be of some use as a middle reliever. The Braves, though, might send him right back to Triple-A on Sunday to open up a spot for Chuck James.

The move makes room for Bob Wickman on the roster and in the bullpen. He’ll likely be back at some point in the second half.
