Barry

Barry spent much of July with the Braves as a reliver, but he’s going to join the rotation this time and start Saturday against the Brewers. It’s unlikely that he’ll be worth using in NL-only leagues.

Thomson is out indefinitely due to a sore shoulder and the Braves will need a starter for Tuesday’s game. Barry is 4-5 with a 3.30 ERA in 18 starts for Triple-A Richmond. Anthony Lerew is also being mentioned as a possible starter for Tuesday.

At best, Barry might have some sort of lasting career as a middle reliever. The Braves might have to give him another start or two, but he won’t last in that role.

Barry was hit hard in his first major league start on Saturday. He is expected to remain in the rotation until Kyle Davies is healthy enough to return.

Barry made just one appearance, throwing three scoreless innings against the Yankees on Monday. He’ll be back.

Barry did some nice work as a reliever the past two years, but it never earned him a callup from the Braves. He was also bypassed twice in the Rule 5 draft. The 27-year-old resumed starting this year for the first time since college and had a 3.26 ERA and a 63/27 K/BB ratio in 77 1/3 innings for Richmond. If his command holds up, he could be of some use as a middle reliever. The Braves, though, might send him right back to Triple-A on Sunday to open up a spot for Chuck James.

Barry will return to the pen two days after being sent down to make room for Chris Reitsma. The Braves will use in long relief for now and could try him as a starter at some point.

The move makes room for Bob Wickman on the roster and in the bullpen. He’ll likely be back at some point in the second half.

Tyler Yates replaced him against the Giants. Barry should be day-to-day.

Barry left Thursday’s game after taking a comebacker off his leg.
