Pirates agreed to minor league contracts with OF Bryce Johnson, 1B Malcom Nuñez, and RHP Eddy Yean and invited them all to spring training.
Johnson is the most noteworthy of the three despite posting a .177/.248/.226 slash line over 140 MLB plate appearances. In 2024, he hit hitting .288/.407/.431 with the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in El Paso. He has always posted solid walk rates and can swipe bases, so there’s a chance he can play his way into some at-bats in Pittsburgh in 2024. Nuñez could provide organization depth at the corner infield spots, and Yean was traded with Wil Crowe from the Nationals to the Pirates for Josh Bell back in 2020. Yean had been the Nationals’ 6th-ranked prospect at the time but he hasn’t been able to match those expectations.
  • PHI Shortstop #31
Pirates reassigned INF’s Liover Peguero and Malcom Nuñez and RHP’s Kyle Nicolas and Jared Jones to minor league camp.
Peguero is the lone notable cut from the latest batch of cuts for the Pirates. He’ll spend the remainder of the spring on the minor league side of camp.

  • 3rd Baseman #74
Pirates acquired INF Malcom Nuñez and RHP Johan Oviedo from the Cardinals for LHP José Quintana and RHP Chris Stratton
Nuñez, 21, has put up a .823 OPS with 17 home runs at the Double-A level this season. He was ranked by MLB.com as the Cards’ No. 10 prospect.

  • COL Starting Pitcher #62
Jeff Passan of ESPN reports that the Cardinals are finalizing a trade to acquire José Quintana from the Pirates.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch says that the Cards will also get reliever Chris Stratton. Independent Cuban baseball reporter Francys Romero hears that the Pirates will receive Johan Oviedo and Malcom Nuñez in the deal. Quintana has experienced a bounce-back campaign in 2022 in Pittsburgh, putting up a 3.50 ERA and 89/31 K/BB ratio over 103 innings covering 20 starts. He’ll provide much-needed innings for a rotation which has battled injuries.

  • 3rd Baseman #74
Cardinals INF prospect Malcom Nunez homered twice while going 3-for-5 Tuesday for Double-A Springfield.
Nunez also singled and drove in five runs in the contest. Over 61 games, the 21-year-old has gone deep 11 times, and the three-hit effort sees his slash improve to .260/.380/.466. There’s no doubting Nunez’s power; it could be plus-plus someday, and he’s a hitter who is willing to draw walks and also has minimal swing-and-miss. The questions come as to where Nunez is going to play -- particularly as a member of the St. Louis system where third base seems occupied for a while -- and he’s not an elite defender anywhere. Still, the bat can play, and Nunez could be someone worth fantasy consideration as soon as next year. The 2024 season seems a bit more likely.
