Alexander, 35, last was in the majors with the Padres in Sept. 2005, going 2-for-18. He is a career .232/.284/.326 hitter in 1,237 at-bats. The Padres will have him play behind Geoff Blum until Khalil Greene is activated from the disabled list.

Padres acquired infielder Manny Alexander from the Rangers for RHP Juan Jimenez.
They’re not really going to put him on the roster, are they? There’s just no way a team with so many Rangers castoffs can possibly hope to advance in the playoffs. Alexander was hitting .309/.365/.473 in 414 AB for Triple-A Oklahoma. The 19-year-old Jimenez had a 3.86 ERA in 13 starts for the Rookie AZL Padres.

Manny Alexander went 0-for-3 and committed an error on a routine grounder in the ninth inning tonight while filling in for Khalil Greene at shortstop.
Trevor Hoffman bailed Alexander out after the error put men on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth. It’s hard to believe manager Bruce Bochy used Alexander over Damian Jackson with Greene needing the day off. It’s a mistake he shouldn’t make again.

    Padres released infielder Manny Alexander.
Amazingly, Alexander actually made a few starts for the Padres last month. He won’t be brought back to act as insurance once again.
