Hernandez didn’t play in 2020 after being released by the Red Sox at the end of August. He’s more likely roster fodder at this point, but could compete for a utility role with Chicago if he plays well in the Cactus League.

Hernandez has some potential as a utility infielder, but he’s often been sidetracked by injuries. He was removed from the Red Sox’ 40-man roster earlier this year.

Hernandez was removed from Boston’s 40-man roster last week. He’ll still be in camp with the team, but he seems unlikely to have a roster spot coming out of spring training.

The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for Austin Brice. Hernandez has hit just .265/.300/.342 over parts of three seasons in the majors.

It’s a split contract, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, and Hernandez will have a spot on the 40-man roster. The 27-year-old utilityman was non-tendered by Boston on Monday after struggling to the tune of a .250/.279/.338 batting line with two home runs and one stolen base over 61 games (155 plate appearances) in 2019. He will compete for a spot on the Red Sox bench in the spring.

Hernandez, 27, was mediocre in a utility role with the Red Sox in 2019, slashing .250/.279/.338 with two homers, 11 RBI and one stolen base in 155 plate appearances. He’ll look for work elsewhere on the free agent market.

Hernandez has played well at the MLB level this season, though the sample size is rather small. He will provide depth for Boston’s infield while Michael Chavis recovers from an AC sprain in his left shoulder.

Hernandez’s latest stint in the majors only lasted a couple days. He’ll return in September.

Hernandez has hit .339/.359/.500 in 27 games for the Red Sox this season. He might only be up while David Price is on paternity leave.

Hernandez heads down to make room for Mitch Moreland, who was activated off the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. The infielder hit exceptionally well in his time with the Red Sox with a .339 average and .859 OPS over 62 games. There’s a very good chance we see him back in a utility role with Boston at some point in August or September.
