Rangers selected the contract of INF Matt Duffy from Triple-A Round Rock.
Duffy is coming up as infield depth with Josh Jung on the injured list. Duffy hit just .218 at Triple-A, but has previously spent parts of eight seasons in the major leagues.

Rangers re-signed INF Matt Duffy to a minor league contract.
Duffy is back in the fold with the Rangers just a few days after opting out of his minor league deal with the club. He’ll open the year back at Triple-A Round Rock as extra organizational depth.
  • FA 3rd Baseman #15
Matt Duffy has opted out of his minor league contract with the Rangers.
The veteran infielder likely wasn’t to break camp with Texas, and he decided to opt out of his minor league contract in hopes of finding another gig with another team. He hit .251/.306/.325 across 209 plate appearances with the Royals last year and could land a backup role with another team within the next few days.
  • TEX 3rd Baseman #15
Rangers signed INF Matt Duffy to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Duffy spent last year as a Royals’ reserve, batting .251/.306/.325 in 209 plate appearances. The 33-year-old will compete for a spot on the Texas bench, but even if he has one initially, he’ll likely be overtaken as younger players emerge.
  • KC Shortstop #11
Maikel Garcia is absent from the Royals’ starting lineup on Monday night.
The speedy third baseman battled a rib injury last week, so they’re likely just easing him back into full-time action. Matt Duffy will start in his place at the hot corner and bat eighth for the Royals against Johan Oviedo and the Pirates on Monday night in Kansas City.

Maikel Garcia (ribs) is not in the Royals’ starting lineup for Sunday’s finale against the Cubs.
Garcia was removed from Friday’s contest due to upper body discomfort, and has since been diagnosed with rib inflammation. The 23-year-old breakout infielder wound up missing a pair of games over the weekend due to the issue, which has been bothering him for over a week at this juncture. Matt Duffy will bat seventh and play third base in his place. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

Maikel Garcia (upper body) is not in the Royals’ starting lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Cubs.
Garcia was removed from Friday’s game with upper body discomfort and needed another day to recover. The 23-year-old speedster is hitting .284/.328/.379 with four homers and 18 stolen bases across 370 plate appearances. Matt Duffy will start at the hot corner in his absence.
  • KC Catcher #13
Salvador Perez is not in the Royals lineup for Thursday’s game against the Mariners.
It’s just a routine day off for the veteran, who started Wednesday night’s game behind the plate. Freddy Fermin will handle the catching duties with Matt Duffy at 1B. Perez has started to heat up in August, slashing .315/.356/.481 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 14 games. He should be back in the lineup on Friday.
  • KC 2nd Baseman #19
Michael Massey is not in the Royals’ starting lineup for Saturday’s showdown against the Phillies.
Massey has been on the Royals’ better hitters as of late but will start Saturday’s game on the bench with lefty Cristopher Sánchez on the bump for the Phillies. Massey is hitting .286/.359/.600 with two homers and two steals in his last ten games. Matt Duffy will bat third and play second base in his absence.

Nick Pratto is absent from the Royals’ starting lineup for Monday night’s tilt atgainst the Guardians in Cleveland.
It looks to be just a routine day of rest for the 24-year-old. Pratto has hit .241/.330/.383 with seven homers, 31 RBI and one stolen base in 291 plate appearances for the Royals this season. Matt Duffy will start in his place at first base and bat fifth against Logan Allen and the Guardians on Monday night.
