The latest round of cuts leaves 56 players in camp this spring for San Diego. Schrock is the most prominent by a wide margin, while Merrill is regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball after being selected in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft. Tucker is another interesting cut since he hasn’t appeared in the majors since the 2018 campaign.

Schrock would’ve made the Reds’ Opening Day roster last year if not for a late-spring left calf strain that knocked him out until mid-June. He wound up being released in late August after posting a lackluster .339 OPS in 13 games for Cincinnati. The 28-year-old infielder offers plenty of defensive versatility, but may have a hard time cracking San Diego’s crowded roster as a reserve specialist. He’s batted .256/.292/.393 with four homers and one steal in 178 plate appearances in the majors since 2020.

Schrock was designated for assignment on Monday and has now been officially cut loose from the organization. The 27-year-old holds a career .256/.292/.393 batting line in 178 total major league plate appearances.

Schrock was already out for the season after suffering a fractured kneecap at Triple-A Louisville and he’s now been sent to waivers.

Schrock suffered the injury at Triple-A Louisville when he fouled a ball off his leg. He had been slated to be added to the Reds’ taxi squad but instead will be immobilized for 3-4 weeks.

No other corresponding move has been announced. Schrock hit .154/.185/.154 over 27 plate appearances with the Reds.

Schrock went 4-for-24 with no extra-base hits in his first stint with the Reds this season. He’ll occupy a utility role until Mike Moustakas returns.

Schrock missed a huge chunk of the first half due to a left calf strain and has just four hits in 24 at-bats across 11 games this season.

Schrock is currently on a minor league rehab assignment at Triple-A Louisville and barring any setbacks is probably only a couple of days away from rejoining the Reds. The versatile infielder has been shelved since spring training due to a left calf strain.
