Yankees optioned INF/OF Oswaldo Cabrera and INF Max Schuemann to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; reassigned SS Paul DeJong and 1B/OF Seth Brown to minor league camp.
It’ll most likely be J.C. Escarra, Paul Goldschmidt, Amed Rosario and Randal Grichuk in bench roles for the Yankees to open the season. Cabrera has hit .234/.295/.346 with 20 homers and 15 steals in 949 plate appearances for the Yankees since 2022. Schuemann was acquired from the Athletics in a trade last month and projects as a utility infielder at the highest level.
  • NYY Left Fielder #24
Jasson Domínguez is in left field and leading off Saturday’s Grapefruit League lid-lifter against the Tigers.
Domínguez enters a pivotal spring training without a clear avenue to regular playing time after New York re-signed veterans Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham earlier this offseason. The 23-year-old former top prospect could potentially wind up back at Triple-A to continue his development by playing everyday. These situations have a way of sorting themselves out but it’s clear that Domínguez will offer minimal fantasy appeal in a reduced role at the highest level. Here is the full lineup: Domínguez (LF), Aaron Judge (RF), Ryan McMahon (3B), Paul Goldschmidt (DH), Seth Brown (1B), Paul DeJong (SS), Spencer Jones (CF), Max Schuemann (2B) and Ali Sánchez (C).
  • NYY Shortstop #12
Yankees acquired INF Max Schuemann from the Athletics for RHP Luis Burgos.
The 28-year-old infielder had been designated for assignment on Friday. The Yankees were in the market for quality infield depth with the uncertainty around the status of Anthony Volpe to begin the season, so Schuemann looks like a quality addition. The glove-first infielder can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.
  • ATH Shortstop #12
Athletics designated INF Max Schuemann for assignment
The A’s needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for recently claimed Andy Ibanez, so Schuemann was let go. The 28-year-old can play all over the diamond, but he has hit just .212/.306/.297 in 672 MLB plate appearances. His minor league track record is better, and his defensive versatility might win him some fans in another organization.
  • ATH 1st Baseman #21
Tyler Soderstrom (groin) remains out of the lineup for the fourth straight contest on Tuesday against the Red Sox.
It’s been nearly one week since Soderstrom last played due to groin tightness, but there’s been zero indication from the club that he could potentially require a trip to the injured list. It’ll be Max Schuemann drawing another start in left field on Tuesday night at historic Fenway Park.
  • ATH Shortstop #12
Athletics recalled INF Max Schuemann from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Schuemann was just optioned back to Triple-A on August 22 following the return of Jacob Wilson from the injured list. He has seen significant action with the A’s this season, struggling to a .200/.303/.288 slash line with only two homers, 12 RBI and seven stolen bases over 188 plate appearances. He can be ignored for fantasy purposes.
  • ATH Shortstop #12
Athletics optioned INF Max Schuemann to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Unfortunately for Schuemann, it looks like he was the odd man out with Jacob Wilson (forearm) returning from the injured list on Friday. The 28-year-old infielder has hit .200/.303/.288 with a pair of homers, 12 RBI and seven swipes in 188 plate appearances with the A’s this season.
  • ATH Shortstop #12
Max Schuemann hit three troubles in a win over the Nationals on Thursday.
The three doubles are a career high, which can’t be a surprise. Even with the two-baggers, he’s still slashing an unusable .215/.313/.313.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman #17
Luis Urías (back) is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Nationals.
Urías has not been able to get into games since leaving Sunday against the D-backs with back spasms. The 28-year-old will remain on the bench for Wednesday with Max Schuemann getting the start at second base in Urías’s absence.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman #17
Luis Urías (back) is absent from the lineup for Tuesday’s series opener against the Nationals.
Urías will sit out Tuesday’s contest in Washington, D.C. after leaving Sunday’s game against the Diamondbacks with lower back spasms. He’s presumably day-to-day for now since he hasn’t been placed on the injured list after a couple days of evaluation and treatment. It’ll be Max Schuemann taking over at the keystone in his absence.
