Mercedes returned from Tommy John surgery this season and compiled a 2.76 ERA and 43/24 K/BB ratio over 65 1/3 innings between Class A and High-A. While he has only averaged 6.4 K/9 over five seasons in pro ball, he throws quite hard and could emerge as a useful pitcher out of the bullpen.

The deal does not include an invite to spring training. Mercedes, 25, had an ugly 4.95 ERA and 52/23 K/BB ratio over 60 innings this past season between Double- and Triple-A. He’s just bullpen depth in the minors.

He’s taking the roster spot of Buck Farmer. Mercedes has posted a 4.33 ERA while striking out just 27 over 52 innings for Toledo this season. He won’t be used in high-leverage situations.

Mercedes tossed two scoreless relief innings in his lone appearance with the big club. He was sent down in order to clear space in the bullpen for Jim Johnson.

Mercedes had a 4.92 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 60 1/3 innings this past season out of the Tigers’ bullpen. The 24-year-old righty will likely pass through waivers unclaimed.
