Blue Jays optioned OF Jonatan Clase to Triple-A Buffalo; reassigned SS Arjun Nimmala and LHP Michael Plassmeyer to minor league camp.
There wasn’t much of a path for Clase to a spot on Toronto’s roster at the start of the season with Davis Schneider, Nathan Lukes and Myles Straw occupying reserve roles. Nimmala has evolved into one of Toronto’s top prospects after being selected 20th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft as a prep shortstop.
  • TOR Relief Pitcher #49
Blue Jays signed LHP Michael Plassmeyer to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Plassmeyer fortifies Toronto’s relief depth on the doorstep of the majors heading into next season after posting a serviceable 4.43 ERA (5.35 FIP) and 21.9 percent strikeout rate across 105 2/3 innings over 28 appearances (16 starts) at the Triple-A level this past season. The 29-year-old lefty hasn’t pitched in the majors since making three appearances for the Phillies from 2022-2023.
  • TEX Relief Pitcher #52
Rangers optioned LHPs Walter Pennington, LHP Jacob Latz and RHP Cole Winn to Triple-A Round Rock; optioned RHP Winston Santos to Double-A Frisco; reassigned 1B Blaine Crim, OF Cody Thomas, LHP Michael Plassmeyer, LHP Robby Ahlstrom and RHP Nolan Hoffman to minor league camp.
Pennington, 26, did a decent job in 16 appearances at the big league level in 2024 — posting a 3.00 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and a 17/11 K/BB ratio over 18 innings — so it’s a bit surprising to see him sent out so early when there are still unsettled spots in the Rangers’ bullpen. He’ll probably get an opportunity to pitch for the Rangers at some point during the upcoming 2025 season.
  • TEX Relief Pitcher #49
Rangers signed LHP Michael Plassmeyer to a minor league contract.
Plassmeyer joins the Rangers after spending the 2024 season in the Pirates’ organization. The southpaw did have an 86/13 K/BB, which is good, but also a 7.93 ERA for Triple-A Indianapolis, which is not. He’ll complete for a bullpen spot in spring training, but is more likely to be fodder in Triple-A for Texas.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #49
Pirates re-assigned LHP Michael Plassmeyer, RHP Ben Heller and C Abrahan Gutierrez to minor league camp.
Once again, there are no major surprises among this batch of cuts for the Pirates. Plassmeyer pitched very well in Grapefruit League action — hurling 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball while registering a 1.36 WHIP and a 4/1 K/BB ratio over 3 2/3 innings. Expect him to get an opportunity with the big league club at some point during the 2024 campaign.
  • PIT Relief Pitcher #49
Pirates signed LHP Michael Plassmeyer to a minor league contract.
Plassmeyer will likely get an opportunity in spring training to carve out a role amongst Pittsburgh’s relief corps. The 27-year-old lefty was hit hard in his lone appearance this past season for the Phillies before being removed from the club’s 40-man roster back in November. He posted a respectable 4.64 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 83/31 K/BB ratio across 75 2/3 innings (19 appearances, 17 starts) in the Phillies’ minor league system.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #49
Phillies sent LHP Michael Plassmeyer outright to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Plassmeyer was hit hard in his lone appearance this past season for the Phillies and finds himself jettisoned from the club’s 40-man roster at the outset of the offseason. The 27-year-old southpaw figures to remain with Philadelphia as extra pitching depth.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #49
Phillies option LHP Michael Plassmeyer to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Plassmeyer was crushed by the Mets on Saturday, allowing ten runs (nine earned) across 3 2/3 innings. The southpaw has spent most of the season in the minor leagues and will likely remain irrelevant in fantasy heading into the 2024 fantasy baseball season.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #49
Making his first major league start, Michael Plassmeyer was crushed for 10 runs (nine earned) over 3 2/3 innings in a loss to the Mets on Saturday.
Ouch. Plassmeyer surrendered eight hits, including a pair of homers to Francisco Alvarez — with a grand slam along the way — and a two-run shot to Francisco Lindor. If that wasn’t bad enough, he also hit three batters. The 26-year-old southpaw made a pair of relief appearances for the Phillies last year, but this was his first opportunity in the majors this year after spending the bulk of the season in Triple-A. The Phillies called him up strictly for the doubleheader and he’s unlikely to be fantasy-relevant rolling into 2024.
  • PHI Relief Pitcher #49
Phillies selected the contract of LHP Michael Plassmeyer from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Plassmeyer will start the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Mets. The 26-year-old hurler posted a 3.68 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and a 7/1 K/BB ratio over 7 1/3 ininngs with the Phillies during the 2022 season.
