The move clears a spot for Wednesday’s starter, Guillermo Moscoso, on the active roster. Ekstrom was called up from the minors a month ago and posted a 6.32 ERA and 9/2 K/BB ratio over 15 2/3 innings. There’s a chance he could pass through waivers unclaimed.

Ekstrom was designated for assignment Wednesday and passed through waivers unclaimed. He’ll continue to serve as organizational relief depth in the minors.

He’ll receive an invite to spring training. Ekstrom spent most of 2012 at Triple-A Colorado Springs with the Rockies, posting a 2.53 ERA while striking out 57 over 57 innings. He’s put up a 5.61 ERA with 45 punchouts over 61 career big league frames.
