In order to protect the injuries he sustained when he was hit in the face by a pitch earlier this month, Moriarty wore a protective jaw guard attached to his batting helmet.

Moriarty was hitting .233 for Syracuse and was considered expendable after the promotion of Simon Pond from Double-A New Haven.

Astros signed infielder Mike Moriarty to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A New Orleans.

The Astros needed some extra depth after calling up Eric Bruntlett and David Matranga. Moriarty was hitting .233 for Triple-A Syracuse before being released by the Blue Jays this week.

Mike Moriarty was taken to a hospital today after being hit in the head by a pitch from Tampa Bay’s Seth McClung.

Moriarty remained down on the field for about five minutes and appeared to be bleeding before standing and walking to the clubhouse. The team has yet to release any info on his condition.

Mike Moriarty is out indefinitely with small fractures to his cheekbone and orbital bone.

Moriarty had a CT scan Sunday and is scheduled to see a doctor again on Friday. ''It isn’t nearly as bad as we thought,’' manager Carlos Tosca said. ''There are a couple of breaks, but they aren’t displaced fractures.’'
