Carlos Gomez has been sidelined since September 12 with an intercostal strain, and it’s not clear when he might be ready to return to the Astros’ starting lineup.

Gomez took swings on Sunday and reported feeling good on Monday, but Astros manager A.J. Hinch told Jose de Jesus Ortiz of the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday that the workout wasn’t all that intensive. Hinch added that there remains no timetable for Gomez and that he’s growing concerned about how much the 29-year-old deadline acquisition will be able to contribute the rest of the way.

Gomez has batted just .234/.282/.379 since being acquired from the Brewers in late July.

Houston is clinging to the second American League Wild Card spot.
