Jon Heyman reports that Alexi Amarista signed a one-year major league contract with the Rockies with a club option for 2018.

Big news for the day after Christmas I guess.

Amarista was non-tendered by the Padres to make roster space a few weeks ago after hitting .257/.295/.271 in 65 games last season. He has a .596 career OPS in 1,725 plate appearances. That’s not great, but he’s a useful player defensively, having appeared everyplace except catcher and first base over the course of his career. He’s even pitched a couple of times.

Merry Christmas to Amarista.
