2:35 PM ET: From Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports comes word that the Dodgers are nearing an agreement with free agent second baseman Chase Utley. No word yet on the contract length or monetary value.
Utley batted just .212/.286/.343 in 107 games this past season between Philadelphia and Los Angeles, and he got only three at-bats for the Dodgers in the playoffs.
It remains to be seen whether they are viewing him as a utility player for 2016 or a possible regular at second base. Howie Kendrick was the Dodgers’ primary second baseman in 2015, but he is now a free agent.
It’s been a disappointing offseason so far for the Dodgers, who lost Zack Greinke to the Diamondbacks on Friday night and have been beaten to the punch on some of their reported relief targets.
Utley, who turns 37 in two weeks, isn’t really much of a splash.
