John Shea of the San Francisco reported Monday night that a deal was close and now Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News says it’s done: Kyle Blanks has signed a minor league contract with the Giants.
He’ll get an invitation to major league spring training and should have a decent shot at an Opening Day roster spot if his health cooperates. The oft-injured outfielder appeared in just 18 games for the Rangers in 2015 and 26 games between San Diego and Oakland in 2014.
Blanks looked like a potential star in the making back in 2009 when he posted an .868 OPS (137 OPS+) with 10 home runs in 54 games as a 22-year-old rookie with the Padres.
Consider him a Michael Morse or Justin Maxwell type for the Giants.
