Last October the Pirates dropped Jose Tabata from their 40-man roster and he’s been in Indianapolis all year. Just a few days ago the Pirates brass made some noises which sounded like they’d like to trade Tabata rather than ever bring him back to Pittsburgh. But back to Pittsburgh he comes, as the Pirates have purchased his contract from their Triple-A squad.
Tabata has hit .352/.422/.396 in a little over 100 plate appearances in the minors this year. He’s just below league average in 1,724 career major league plate appearances, however, which is below what the Pirates expected of him when they traded for him lo those many years ago and which certainly underperforms the $15 million contract to which he is signed.
But hey, second chances.
