Mariners call up hard-throwing reliever Stephen Pryor

Seattle is adding a power arm to the bullpen, calling up right-hander Stephen Pryor after the 2010 fifth-round pick posted a 0.64 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 28 innings between Double-A and Triple-A.

Pryor was similarly dominant in his first two pro seasons as well and arrives in the majors with a 2.87 ERA and 155 strikeouts in 113 innings as a minor leaguer, although his control is a big question mark after he walked 4.6 batters per nine frames.

Pryor works in the mid-90s with his fastball and has been clocked in the triple-digits at times, so if he can improve his control from terrible to merely bad he might have a future as the Mariners’ closer.
