Matt Holliday was activated from the disabled list on September 15, but he’s been limited to pinch-hitting duties as he rebuilds the strength in his right quadriceps.
That’ll change Wednesday at Busch Stadium.
Holliday is starting in left field and batting third as the Cardinals wrap up a three-game series against the Reds. It’ll be his first start since July 29, when he suffered his second severe quad strain of the season.
The veteran slugger has appeared in only 66 games this year for the National League Central-leading Cardinals, slashing .287/.409/.416 with four home runs and 31 RBI.
Randal Grichuk is also starting in the St. Louis outfield Wednesday. His throwing ability is still limited due to an elbow strain that he suffered back in mid-August.
Good luck to Tommy Pham, who is starting in center between two compromised corner men.
