Jenrry Mejia was fantastic in his season debut for the Mets today, throwing seven shutout innings against the Nationals, and afterward manager Terry Collins announced that the 23-year-old right-hander will remain in what is now a six-man rotation.

In upping the rotation from five to six starters the Mets are making room for Mejia to stick around, but the shift also allows them to limit the overall workloads for 24-year-old Matt Harvey and 23-year-old Zack Wheeler. Harvey has already thrown 137 innings for the Mets and Wheeler has logged 107 innings between the majors and minors.

Because of elbow problems Mejia has thrown just 32 total innings this season even after his brilliant outing today and he’s scheduled to undergo surgery to remove bone spurs from his elbow once the season is over.
