Mike Schmidt is recovering from stage 3 melanoma

Some scary news, but ultimately positive news for the greatest third baseman of all time. From the Philadelphia Daily News:

Schmidt, 64, was diagnosed with Stage 3 melanoma in August and underwent two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation treatments in the months that followed. Schmidt, who arrived in Clearwater this weekend to begin his second tenure with the Phillies broadcast team, said the latest scans on his body have been clear of skin cancer. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.

These days, every single clubhouse is stocked with sunscreen and most players use it liberally (not just the pitchers). Given how much time these guys spend outdoors, it’s an absolute necessity. Indeed, I’m surprised we don’t hear more about players from before the 90s -- back when there was far less concern about UV rays and the savage tan look was considered healthy -- battling skin cancer.

Get your skin checked every year, kids. And put on plenty of sunscreen.
