The Phillies announced on Thursday that the club activated utilityman Cody Asche from the 15-day disabled list and designated outfielder David Lough for assignment.
Asche suffered a Grade 1 oblique strain in February shortly after the beginning of spring training. The Phillies had used him in the outfield as well as his natural position at third base last year, but planned to give him work at first base over the spring to find a place to put him. With Lough out of the picture, Asche could still find some playing time in the outfield as well.
Lough hit a meager .239/.342/.313 in 79 plate appearances at the big league level for the Phillies. The club has averaged 3.13 runs per game, the worst mark in the majors. Today’s roster move along with Wednesday’s acquisition of Jimmy Paredes, is the club’s attempt to make some small tweaks in an attempt to add more offense.
The Phillies also announced Thursday that pitcher Mario Hollands has been activated from the disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
