The Pirates have claimed catcher Eric Fryer off waivers from the Cardinals, SB Nation’s Chris Cotillo reports. Fryer was designated for assignment by the Cardinals last week.
Fryer, 30, hit a terrific .368/.415/.421 in 41 plate appearances while playing solid defense.
The Pirates are likely looking for a better backup catching option than Erik Kratz, who has a .237 OPS in 38 plate appearances.
