Free agent outfielder Justin Ruggiano has agreed to a one-year, $1.65 million contract with the Rangers.

Ruggiano didn’t get his first extended chance in the majors until age 29 in 2011, but he’s carved out a decent niche as a part-time outfielder for the past five seasons while hitting .261 with 47 homers and a .771 OPS in 403 games.

Ruggiano fits best as a platoon corner outfielder versus left-handed pitchers, against whom he has an .856 career OPS compared to a .695 OPS off righties. In addition to playing left field and right field he may also see some time at first base for the Rangers.
