Hurricane Irene has created a little dissension with the Red Sox. With Sunday’s game against the A’s at Fenway sure to be rained out, management wanted to schedule a doubleheader Friday. The players, though, rejected that idea, largely because the team flight home from Texas after tonight’s game isn’t due in until about 5 a.m. tomorrow morning.
So, the players are going to win this battle and get the doubleheader Saturday. The Red Sox would have made more money with two games Friday, and the conditions will likely be unfavorable at best by the time the second game Saturday rolls around. Still, Friday would have been a miserable day for the players if they had to show up to the ballpark to play a day game.
To deal with the weather Saturday, the Red Sox will push up the game times, likely to noon and 5 pm, the Providence Journal’s Tim Britton reports.
