Report: Jay Bruce told the Reds to trade him anywhere but to New York

In a mailbag posted over the weekend, Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News mentioned that before the Reds traded outfielder Jay Bruce to the Mets, the veteran asked the club to trade him anywhere but to New York. Whoops.

The Mets acquired Bruce from the Reds ahead of the trade deadline on August 1, sending Dilson Herrera and minor leaguer Max Wotell to Cincinnati.

Bruce, 29, has had a miserable time as a Met, batting .198/.270/.327 with three home runs and eight RBI in 111 plate appearances coming into Sunday night’s game. He did homer on Sunday night against the Nationals, though, so there’s that.

Bruce has a $13 million club option for the 2017 season. It remains to be seen if the Mets will pick that up.
