The Royals have designated second baseman Omar Infante for assignment and called up pitcher Brian Klynn from Triple-A Omaha, per MLB.com’s Jeffrey Flanagan.

Infante hit a disappointing .239/.279/.321 in 149 plate appearances. The Royals began mixing Christian Colon into the second base mix in early May, then added Whit Merrifield in late May. Infante hasn’t started since June 3, with Merrifield drawing eight starts and Colon three.

The Royals owe Infante the balance of his $7.75 million salary for this season, $8 million in 2017, and a $2 million buyout for the 2018 season.

Infante, by the way, was in third place in All-Star balloting among American League second baseman.
