Ted Lilly, who announced his retirement in November after undergoing surgery to cauterize nerves in his neck, has joined the Cubs’ front office as a special assistant to president of baseball operations Theo Epstein and general manager Jed Hoyer.

Lilly was trying to make a comeback while pitching in Venezuela, but ultimately decided he simply couldn’t do it any more at age 37. He finished with 130 wins and a 4.14 ERA in 1,983 innings spread over 15 seasons for six different teams, earning more than $80 million.
