Friday night Alex Avila was scratched from the Tigers’ lineup with what the team called a forearm contusion and today they placed the catcher on the disabled list with ... “loose bodies” in his left knee.

I’ll take off my doctor’s hat and just say that seems like an odd series of events, but whatever the case Avila is shut down for at least 15 days and possibly a lot longer with another in a long line of injuries. Apparently the knee has been bothering him for much of the season.

Triple-A catcher Bryan Holaday was called up to take Avila’s spot on the roster, but James McCann figures to see most of the action behind the plate.
