Tim Byrdak leads the majors with 56 appearances this season and is second only to Jonny Venters with 128 appearances dating back to the start of last season. Unfortunately he has paid the price for his heavy workload.
According to David Lennon of New York Newsday, the Mets announced this evening that Byrdak was diagnosed with an anterior capsule tear in his left shoulder. He’s almost certainly headed for the same surgery his teammates Johan Santana and Chris Young had. However, at 38 years old, he’s no sure thing to make it back.
Byrdak posted a 4.40 ERA and 34/18 K/BB ratio over 30 2/3 innings this season prior to being placed on the disabled list with shoulder soreness late last week. He had a 3.05 ERA until being knocked around to the tune of a 7.45 ERA in July.
