Rays RHP prospect Nick Bitsko underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a labrum issue in his right shoulder.
Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that Bitsko is sure to “miss some of [the] 2021 season” but that the exact timeline for his return can’t be determined until he gets into the rehab process. The 18-year-old right-hander was selected 24th overall in the 2020 MLB Draft out of a high school in Pennsylvania.

Rays pitching prospect Nick Bitsko “is likely to soon have surgery to relieve shoulder discomfort,” according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
That’s certainly not great news for the Rays’ first-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. What’s more, Topkin says “the severity of the repair won’t be known until the procedure.” If there’s a silver lining it’s that Bitsko just turned 18 in June, so he’s got plenty of good years still ahead of him. Hopefully the procedure is relatively minor and the right-hander can begin his path to the big leagues sooner than later.

Rays agreed to terms with RHP Nick Bitsko, the 24th pick in the 2020 draft.
Bitsko will get $3 million, according to MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo. That’s a tad higher than his slot value of $2.83 million. Bitsko was originally a 2021 draft prospect, but he reclassified, allowing him to enter the draft as a 17-year-old. He was one of the biggest upside arms available.

Rays selected RHP Nick Bitsko of Central Bucks East High School in Pennsylvania with the 24th pick of the 2020 MLB Draft.
Bitsko is one of the biggest wild cards of the entire draft, in large part because he reclassified from the 2021 draft and did not pitch in front of scouts outside of a bullpen workout in March. He’s also a right-hander who can reportedly get his fastball into the high 90s, and he will also throw a hammer of a curveball that he can locate for strikes or bury down in the zone when ahead in the count. Bitsko repeats his delivery exceptionally well, and should have no issues as a starter. The risk here comes from just not being seen much due to the reclassification and the pandemic, but Bitsko’s upside is readily apparent.
