Giants LHP prospect Nick Swiney gave up one earned run -- two overall -- while striking out nine on Sunday for High-A Eugene.
Swiney, 23, allowed just two hits without issuing a free pass. The 67th pick of last year’s draft has a less-than-spectacular 4.08 ERA in his eight starts, but it’s been accompanied by a 45/15 K/BB ratio and .178 average allowed over 35 1/3 innings. A product of NC State, Swiney has two plus secondary pitches in his curveball and change, and that helps him ‘overcome’ a fastball that doesn’t get much above the low 90s; albeit with decent movement. Swiney is more backend starter than future ace, but he has a chance to be a decent option for the Giants -- and potentially fantasy managers -- by the end of 2023.
