Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports that former Angels manager Phil Nevin is considered a finalist for the Padres’ managerial opening.
Nevin helmed the Halos for a season and a half after Joe Maddon was canned midway through the 2022 season. He spent the bulk of his playing career in San Diego where he played 806 games between 1999 and 2005. Ryan Flaherty and Mike Shildt are believed to be the other finalists for the Padres’ job. The club expects to have a final decision within the next few days.

According to Dennis Lin of Britt Ghiroli of The Athletic, the Padres have interviewed former Angels manager Phil Nevin for their open manager role.
Nevin was the Angels’ manager for a season and a half. The team finished 73-89 in 2022, good for fourth place in the American League West. The Padres said they expect to have a decision on their new manager shortly, with internal candidates Ryan Flaherty and Mike Shildt considered to be the favorites.

The Angels announced Monday evening that Phil Nevin will not return as the team’s manager for the 2024 season.
Nevin took over as the Angels’ skipper on an interim basis after Joe Maddon was fired during the 2022 campaign. He then served one full season as the manager in 2023 — going 73-89 in an extremely disappointing season that led to a fourth place finish in the American League West. The Angels will begin their search for a new manager immediately.

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno announced Monday that he is ending the exploratory process to sell the team and will maintain ownership for the 2023 season and beyond.
Moreno noted in his statement that “we have unfinished business and feel we can make a positive impact on the future of the team and the fan experience”. That collective sigh that you heard was from Angels fans everywhere who were hoping for a much-needed change.

Angels hired Marcus Thames as their next hitting coach.
Thames joins manager Phil Nevin’s staff for the upcoming 2023 season and will replace Jeremy Reed as the team’s hitting coach. The team also announced that pitching coach Matt Wise will be returning next year. Thames served as the Marlins’ hitting coach last year and previously coached alongside Nevin with the Yankees from 2018 until 2021.

Jeremy Reed will not be back as the Angels’ hitting coach in 2023.
Despite elite-level contributions from Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, the Angels finished 22nd among all 30 major league teams in combined OPS (.687) this season. Phil Nevin will be back on a one-year deal as manager, but it sure feels like there is a significant organizational shift coming soon to Anaheim. The biggest domino is that owner Arte Moreno has announced his intention to pursue a sale of the franchise.

Angels signed manager Phil Nevin to a one-year contract.
Nevin took over as interim skipper in Anaheim when Joe Maddon was fired in early June and currently holds a 46-59 managerial record leading into Wednesday’s season finale against the Athletics. It’s sort of odd that he is going to be a lame-duck manager in 2023, but there is a lot of transitioning underway throughout the Angels’ organization with owner Arte Moreno recently announcing his intention to pursue a sale of the franchise.

Jesse Winker was suspended seven games for his actions during Sunday’s brawl between the Mariners and Angels.
Twelve suspensions in total were handed down, with seven of them being players. Winker and manager Phil Nevin got the stiffest penalties at seven and 10 games, respectively. J.P Crawford, Anthony Rendon and Dom Chiti were suspended five games, Andrew Wantz and Ryan Tepera were suspended three games, Julio Rodriguez, Raisel Iglesias, Ray Montgomery and Manny Del Campo were suspended two games and Bill Haselman was suspended one game. Wantz is the only one of the players that has not appealed their suspension.

Jesse Winker was among six players and two managers ejected from Sunday’s game against the Angels after a brawl in the second inning.
The two teams exchanged words late on Saturday night after a pitch from Erik Swanson sailed past the head of Mariners superstar Mike Trout and to the backstop. The two sides argued on the field after the game, but nothing physical came from it. On Sunday, Andrew Wantz threw behind the head of Julio Rodriguez in the first inning. Then, he drilled Winker in the hip leading off the second inning and chaos ensued. Both benches emptied and actual punches were thrown. In the end, Winker, Wantz, Julio Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford, Scott Servais, Phil Nevin, Raisel Iglesias and Ryan Tepera were all ejected. There could be additional discipline handed down for those that threw punches in the melee.

Phil Nevin is making such good progress in his rehab assignment that he could return one series earlier than projected.
Nevin is currently scheduled to come off the DL in Pittsburgh July 29, but manager Bruce Bochy thinks he could be back in San Francisco between the 25th-27th. Nevin has completed five games with Single-A Lake Elsinore, and was moved to Triple-A Portland yesterday.
