Aaron Nola lost to the Reds after giving up four runs and eight hits in five innings on Wednesday.

Three of the runs came in the second, when the Reds racked up four hits. Nola wasn’t hit particularly hard today, with four of the eight hits he allowed coming on soft liners. He struck out five. Still, this is a pretty typical outing for him these days. He’ll take a 2-4 record and a 6.04 ERA into his next outing in San Diego.

Trea Turner singled, walked twice and stole two bases Wednesday against the Reds.

Turner also scored on a 255-foot flyout to left from Bryce Harper that almost no one else would have tried tagging up on. Turner has hit in seven straight games. Even better for fantasy leaguers is that he’s attempted seven steals in his last 11 games, succeeding six times. He was 3-for-3 through his first 38 games.

PHI Designated Hitter #12

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly told reporters Kyle Schwarber (illness) was available to pinch-hit during Wednesday’s loss to the Reds.

Mattingly added that Schwarber was available, but they didn’t get to a spot in the ninth inning where they felt like they could use him an eventual 9-4 loss. The 33-year-old slugger has missed three consecutive games due to illness, but the fact that he was available to pinch-hit strongly implies that he’ll be ready for Friday’s series opener against the Guardians.

Kyle Schwarber (illlnes) remains out of the lineup on Wednesday against the Reds.

This will be the third straight missed game for Schwarber, who is dealing with an undisclosed illness. Bryce Harper will continue to DH, with Alec Bohm at first base and EdMunro Sosa at third base.

Jesús Luzardo pitched two-run ball for six innings Tuesday in a loss to the Reds.

The runs came in the fourth after the Reds loaded the bases with no outs and then settled for a pair of sac flies. As it turned out, that was enough to drop Luzardo to 3-4 on the season. It’s the sixth time in 10 starts that Luzardo has allowed two runs or fewer. Unfortunately, he’s given up 24 earned runs in the other four. He’ll likely face the Padres on Monday.

Adolis García went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts against the Reds on Tuesday.

García has fanned 15 times during a 1-for-29 slump that’s dropped his OPS to .612. He hasn’t fared too badly when he’s made contact and he’s sporting a 50 percent hard-hit rate, but this is ugly right now. He should be in the lineup against a left-hander on Wednesday, but if this continues, maybe he’ll do some sitting in favor of Otto Kemp against righties this weekend.

Kyle Schwarber (illness) remains out of the lineup on Tuesday against the Reds.

This time, Trea Turner will slide into the designated hitter spot, which will allow Edmundo Sosa to remain in the lineup at shortstop and bat seventh. We wouldn’t expect Schwarber’s absence to extend much longer.
Bryson Stott

PHI 2nd Baseman #5

Bryson Stott went 1-for-3 with a walk and a home run against the Reds on Monday.

After the Reds took a one-run lead in the top of the 8th inning, Stott clubbed a two-run home run off Graham Ashcraft to put the Phillies on top for good. Stott has had really good contact metrics all season, but the production hadn’t been there early on. It’s starting to tick up lately. In May, Stott is hitting .254 with five doubles, five home runs, 18 RBIs, and an .890 OPS in 15 games. Those 18 RBIs lead all of Major League Baseball in the month.
Alec Bohm

PHI 3rd Baseman #28

Alec Bohm went 2-for-3 with a homer and a walk Monday in the Phillies’ 5-4 win over the Reds on Monday.

It was Bohm and Bryson stepping up for the Phillies tonight, as Stott hit a go-ahead homer after Bohm singled with the club down 4-3 in the eighth. Bohm’s homer off Nick Lodolo came two innings earlier. He’s 15-for-35 with three homers and three doubles during a nine-game hitting streak that has raised his OPS from .433 to .604.
Andrew Painter

PHI Starting Pitcher #24

Andrew Painter pitched two-run ball for six innings Monday in a no-decision against the Reds.

A second straight very tidy outing from Painter saw him record his first quality start in only 69 pitches. Including last week’s start in Boston, he’s totaled 131 pitches while allowing three runs over 11 innings in his last two turns. In the two starts prior to that, he threw 187 pitches over 8 2/3 innings, giving up 11 runs in the process. Painter allowed three hits and five hard-hit balls tonight. He struck out three, settling for just three whiffs on 33 swings. But while strikeouts are nice, the Phillies surely prefer efficient six-inning outings for the moment. Painter will face the Guardians this weekend.
