Rockies manager Bud Black said Friday that Rayan Gonzalez is likely headed for surgery to repair ligament damage in his pitching elbow.
That probably means the 26-year-old right-hander is headed for Tommy John surgery. He underwent an MRI on Wednesday after he was pulled from a Cactus League game due to discomfort in his throwing arm. He’s expected to miss the entire 2017 season.

Rayan Gonzalez was pulled from Wednesday’s Cactus League game against the Brewers due to right elbow discomfort.
Gonzalez injured his elbow in the eighth inning of Wednesday’s contest and was escorted off the field after pointing to his forearm. He will be reevaluated on Thursday, but the team is worried that this could be a potentially serious injury. Said manager Bud Black, “I’m concerned about this one. It was elbow discomfort. He was feeling some pain.” The 26-year-old right-hander pitched to a 3.19 ERA while fanning 49 batters in 52 frames at Double-A Hartford last season.

Rayan Gonzalez left Wednesday’s Cactus League game against the Brewers with a possible arm injury.
Gonzalez pointed to his forearm and tried to make a fist before exiting Wednesday’s contest. That early indication is none too encouraging, but the Rockies should pass along details as to the extent and nature of the injury in the coming hours. This past season, Gonzalez posted a 3.19 ERA with 49 strikeouts in 52 innings for Double-A Hartford.
