Pirates signed RHP Ron Chiavacci to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Chiavacci, 27, sort of resembled a prospect when he struck out 161 batters in 25 starts for Montreal’s Double-A affiliate in 2001, but he’s always had poor command. He had a 5.11 ERA in eight starts and 17 relief appearances for Triple-A Edmonton last season. There’s little chance that he’ll ever help a major league team.

The Pirates sold the contract of reliever Ron Chiavacci to the SK Wyverns of the Korean Baseball Organization.
Chiavacci was 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 10 appearances for Triple-A Indianapolis.

Expos reassigned pitchers Ron Chiavacci and Clint Everts to minor league camp.
Chiavacci, who split time as a starter and a reliever for Double-A Harrisburg last year, had allowed two runs in 1 2/3 innings this spring. Everts was Montreal’s first-round pick in last year’s draft.
