Ryan Freel is reportedly challenging for D’Angelo Jimenez’s starting second base job.

Freel, who started spring late this season, is still expected to be the team’s utility man. But manager Dave Miley likes to play the hot hand, and reportedly is considering a switch because of Jimenez’s .156 average in March.

The Reds may be looking at Ryan Freel as more than a utility player for 2005.

And why not? With a .380 on-base percentage and 32 stolen bases in 450 at-bats, he’s shown he can lead off and play good defense. They could use him as a one-year stopgap at third base until Edwin Encarnacion is ready, or they could decide to non-tender the arbitration-eligible D’Angelo Jimenez and go with Freel at second base.

With Brandon Larson getting designated for assignment, Ryan Freel will be the usual third baseman, sharing time with Juan Castro and Felipe Lopez.

The Reds, assuming they don’t go after a one-year free agent, will hold an audition for the job next season with top prospect Edwin Encarnacion getting a long look. Freel, with his speed, remains a valuable NL-only league commodity the rest of this season.

Ryan Freel went 2-for-4 as the leadoff hitter for the Reds yesterday.

Freel is a useful reserve who gives the Reds some speed, but his .318 on-base percentage indicates he’s not an ideal option for the role once D’Angelo Jimenez breaks out of his slump.

''The strength is there,’' he said. ''I’m going to start picking it up and doing some agility stuff. It’s feeling good.’' Freel will be ready to open the season in a utility role.

Freel hit only .150 in his first callup this season, but is hitting .381 since returning from the minors. He’s day-to-day.

''I don’t have any pain,’' Freel said. ''I want to get it to 100 percent before I go out there. I think it will be Tuesday or Wednesday.’'

Ryan Freel won’t be traded to the Padres, Reds GM Dave Miley said Tuesday.

Miles hasn’t even talked to Padres GM Kevin Towers this spring. Freel is likely to be the Reds’ Opening Day third baseman following the move to place Brandon Larson on the DL.
