Salomon Torres will replace the injured Josh Fogg in the Pirates’ rotation.

Torres left Sunday’s game with a leg injury, but if healthy will start Saturday against the Dodgers. He’s 2-0 with a 1.93 ERA in seven relief appearances this season. Don’t expect miracles, but he might be worth starting for one game against the weak-hitting Dodgers if you’re in a pinch.

Torres was not allowed to do any running or participate in defensive drills. The injury is in the same area where he had a strained hamstring last season. Torres is expected to fill a middle relief role for the Pirates.

In a change of plans, Salomon Torres will make a rehab start for Triple-A Nashville today.

Nelson Figueroa’s fine performance has pushed back Torres’ return. Although he could rejoin the rotation on Saturday, Torres might not be activated until Sept. 1.

''I don’t anticipate it being more than a two-week thing. He will be able to pitch. Whether or not it’s out of the bullpen hasn’t been decided,’' manager Lloyd McClendon said. Torres is eligible to return Aug. 21.

Torres is on the DL with a strained hamstring. If he’s ready to start Thursday, he could bump Nelson Figueroa from the rotation. Josh Fogg is another candidate to go, but only if he has a bad outing today.

Salomon Torres would be next in line to close for the Pirates.

With Jose Mesa on a one-year contract and a candidate to be moved by the trade deadline, Torres looks to be the Pirate most likely to close should Mesa leave. “If we had to fill it from within, I think you’d have to give him the edge,” manager Lloyd McClendon said. “He’s proven it time and time again.” He may be worth picking up and stashing if he is unowned, particularly in NL leagues.
