Dodgers purchased the contract of C Shawn Zarraga from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

The Dodgers needed a backup catcher after trading A.J. Ellis to the Phillies on Thursday. Zarraga has hit .265 across two minor league levels this year with no homers and 14 RBI in 113 at-bats. He won’t be in the majors long with Carlos Ruiz also on his way to Los Angeles.

Zarraga was up with the Dodgers for one game last season but is still looking to make his major league debut. He’s a defense-first catcher who batted .256/.329/.323 with zero homers between Double- and Triple-A in 2016.

Zarraga posted a promising .309/.416/.389 batting line in 92 games this past season between Double-A and Triple-A, but the 25-year-old catcher is not a highly-regarded prospect. Zarraga was a 44th-round pick of the Brewers in the 2007 MLB Amateur Draft.

The 29-year-old backstop spent most of the 2017 season playing for the Cleburne Railroaders in the independent American Association where he hit .272/.383/.397 with three homers and 17 RBI. He’ll add minor league catching depth for the Dodgers.
