Rays acquired OFs Slater de Brun and Austin Overn, C Caden Bodine, RHP Michael Forret and a Competitive Balance Round A pick from the Orioles for RHP Shane Baz.

The 18-year-old outfielder was a first round selection (37th overall) from this past June’s draft and has yet to play in a minor league game. He commanded a $4 million signing bonus, which was substantially higher than the $2.63 million allocated for the 37th pick in the draft. He’s a burner on the basepaths that projects as a player that will hit for a high batting average while playing quality defense in center field, though there are legitimate questions about his power potential.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Orioles have agreed to acquire starter Shane Baz from the Rays.

In return, the Rays will receive a package of minor league players that includes outfielders Slater de Brun and Austin Overn, catcher Caden Bodine and right-hander Michael Forret as well as a Competitive Balance Round A pick. The deal is still pending medicals. Baz posted a disappointing 4.87 ERA over 166 1/3 innings in 2025 despite a strong 24.8 strikeout rate. He represents a major upgrade to the Orioles’ rotation mix.

Orioles signed first-round pick OF Slater de Brun.

Andy Kostka of the Baltimore Banner reports that the signing bonus is $4 million, which is significantly higher than the $2.63 million allocated to the 37th pick. The 18-year-old has speed that grades close to the top of the scales, and he’s viewed as a hitter who has a chance to hit for a high average from the left side while playing quality defense. There’s some power questions, but as a player who doesn’t turn 19 until next June, there’s time for that to develop.
