The move keeps him from becoming a minor league free agent. Redmond, 26, posted a 2.92 ERA and 142/47 K/BB ratio over 169 2/3 innings with Triple-A Gwinnett this season. He’ll stick around as insurance for the major league starting rotation.

The Reds have yet to make an official announcement. Redmond was acquired from the Braves over the weekend in the Paul Janish deal. The 27-year-old right-hander has a 3.58 ERA and 96/28 K/BB ratio through 105 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level.

In other words, he hasn’t officially been called up to the majors. Johnny Cueto, who was scratched from Sunday’s start due to a blister on his finger, is expected to start Tuesday against the Diamondbacks.

He’ll take the place of the injured Joey Votto (knee) on the active roster. Redmond gave up four runs over 3 1/3 innings in a spot-start against the Cubs last month and had a 3.63 ERA and 136/39 K/BB ratio over 148 2/3 innings at the Triple-A level this year. The 27-year-old right-hander will pitch in middle relief.

Redmond spent three days with the Braves but didn’t appear in a game. The 27-year-old right-hander will continue to function as organizational relief depth for Atlanta.

Redmond was called up from the minors on Tuesday, but he was mostly serving as insurance for Johnny Cueto, who was scratched from Sunday’s start due to a blister on his finger. Cueto made it through the start just fine, so the recently-acquired Redmond will head back down to Triple-A.

Redmond spent about 24 hours on the Reds’ active roster. He should get another shot later this summer.

Redmond was called up in mid-July but never made an appearance. He should actually get some work this time around, though primarily in low-leverage relief situations.
