Miller, supposedly the team’s lefty specialist, has failed in the role, including allowing a grand slam on May 1. Lance Carter, a right-hander whose changeup makes him tough on lefties, is expected to assume the role.

Miller, who has had a very inconsistent season, is not really a fantasy asset.

Juan Acevedo, who is supposed to be closing in place of the injured Cliff Politte, didn’t get into the game. Miller doesn’t figure to get more than another one or two saves over the rest of the season.

Miller signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox after being released by the Blue Jays last month. The 38-year-old left-hander has a 4.19 ERA and 11/12 K/BB ratio over 19 1/3 innings between Toronto and St. Louis this season. He likely won’t be trusted in high-pressure situations.

Miller signed a minor league deal with the Cubbies over the winter, but posted allowed seven runs (five earned) over 8 1/3 innings this spring. The 38-year-old southpaw will have to try to continue his career elsewhere.

The deal comes with an invitation to spring training, where Miller will get a shot at an Opening Day bullpen spot. If the 38-year-old lefty specialist makes the big league roster, he will earn a salary of $800,000.

Miller, who held left-handers to a .214/.275/.337 line last season, asked for $850,000 and was offered $1.375 million in arbitration. He’ll continue to be used as a specialist.

This won’t help, although Miller wasn’t doing a very well this season. The Rays will go without a left-handed reliever for now.

Tim Corcoran could be sent down to open up a spot for him.

Miller hasn’t been very good this season, but the Rays did need him back after going 15 days without a lefty in the pen. He’ll help set up for Danys Baez.
